Special Needs Class

Our special needs class caters for children who are mute, or have physical or mental disabilities. The class is based in the primary school and covers a range of ages.

Currently there are nine children in the special needs class. All the children enjoy themselves and they are one of the more rowdy classes in our school. The teacher is amazing with the children. A classroom assistant comes in to help twice or more times a week.

Special needs children learn English and Maths, but they also play and learn how to communicate with each other and children outside class.

Kate Banda, aged 9

Kate came to Home of Hope as a small, malnourished baby. During her first years, she spent much of her time in bed and in the clinic due to her poor immune system and constant illness.

Although she is now doing well, her constant battle with her health can still be seen today - she looks much younger than her 9 years.

Malnourishment not only affects the body, but also brain development. These effects are irreversible. Kate's severe malnourishment means that she is very slow to learn and pick up new things. She loves reading and drawing in our special needs class.

Kate enjoys very occasional visits from her grandmother. Kate's mental and physical difficulties, combined with her status as an orphan, mean that no member of her extended family is willing to look after her, even during school holidays. However, that just gives us more time with Kate, something we consider a privilege.

Kate is currently looking for a sponsor.
